Resources

I’m in my seventh year of blogging. While I have a lot to learn, I know some of you may just be getting started. Here are some resources I discovered which are helping me become a better writer and blogger.

Making An Awesome Blog

How to Start a Blog – This webcast from Michael Hyatt was super helpful to me.

WordPress – the software my site is built on.

BlueHost – the hosting company where my site lives.

Tribe Theme – the theme I use for this site. From writer extraordinaire, Jeff Goins.

Mail Chimp – the service that delivers my posts to my subscribers inbox. Free for up to 2,000 subscribers.

Creating Great Content

Write Room – the simple, distraction-reducing word processor I use to create my posts. Available for Mac OSX and iOS. Syncs to Dropbox.

Compfight Photos – the place where I get most of my photos. Free via Creative Commons license.

Unsplash and StockSnap – my favorite photo sites. Free without attribution.

Vimeo – the video platform where I host all of my sermon videos. Cleaner and quieter than YouTube.

Getting Better at Blogging

Michael Hyatt – An incredible resource for all things blogging, marketing and communicating.

Jeff Goins – If you are a writer, you need to be reading Jeff’s stuff.

Buffer – I use Buffer to schedule my Tweets. Their blog has tons of great content about communicating online.

Copyblogger – For years, this site has been a goldmine for people trying to spread their content online.

Problogger – Darren Rowse’s 31 Days to Build a A Better Blog ebook and podcast series are gold for bloggers!

Inspiration for Your Creativity

The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles – Steven Pressfield helps you fight the resistance that holds you back from your greatest work.

Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us – Seth Godin challenges you to find your voice, to find your audience, and to serve others.

On Writing Well – An editor I worked with recently recommended this to me. It’s been supremely helpful!

Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World – Michael Hyatt’s systematic approach to building a platform online.

You Are a Writer – This short book from Jeff Goins helped me own my identity as a writer.

If there are resources that have helped you learn how to communicate better online, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
